his project undertaken by CLEAR in collaboration with CANARI falls under a larger project called Advancing the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries for Resilient Caribbean Coastal Communities and Livelihoods. The goal of the project is to enhance climate change adaptation, conservation and sustainable management of small-scale fisheries using the ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF) in Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) and Trinidad and Tobago (T&T).
CLEAR and CANARI are collaborating in the design and phased implementation of coral reef restoration activities in Saint Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The activities will focus on enhancing the resilience and ecological value of coral reefs inside the South Coast Marine Conservation Area (SCMCA) in St Vincent and the Soufriere Marine Managed Area (SMMA) in Saint Lucia.
This project follows two years of severe damage to coral reefs around SVG. 2024 was particularly damaging with Hurricane Beryl and an unprecedented mass coral bleaching event, which devastated coral reefs throughout Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. In October 2025, CLEAR began a new hybrid reef enhancement project using Reef Balls in collaboration with the Reef Ball Foundation (RBF).
This involves a combination of man-made Reef Balls, which are used as a base for planting a variety of resilient coral species. Reef Balls provide both an instant habitat for fish and invertebrates, and an ideal surface for long-term coral restoration, thus creating a cost-effective opportunity to enhance the resilience of reef ecosystems.
